CITY COUNCIL MEETING TOMORROW COULD BE ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS

Tomorrow’s Crossville City Council meeting could be one for the record books.  Two of the Council Members are involved in a legal dispute that has escalated to criminal charges from one to the other.  Council Member Jesse Kerley is scheduled for a September court date after being served with a summons based on allegations of assault from Council Member Pete Souza.  The alleged assault took place outside City Hall back in June when Kerley and Souza had ‘a heated exchange’ following a City Council meeting.  In the State of  Tennessee vs Kerley summons, Kerley is charged with a Class A Misdemeanor Assault which carries a penalty of up to 11 months and 29 days in jail.  If all Council Members show up at tomorrow night’s meeting it could be the first time in Crossville’s history (that we can find) where two sitting Council Members are in a criminal court battle with each other during a Council Meeting. However, word is that Kerley will not be in attendance due to a business conflict but that hasn’t been confirmed.  Council Member Souza has announced he will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming November elections.  Council Member Kerley has picked up a petition for running but hasn’t returned the papers to the Election Commission as of this (8/10) morning.

In other news, one item on the agenda concerns the future home of Downtown Crossville Inc., or DCI.  They have been served notice that the organizations lease agreement with the City will be terminated.  The motion to review the lease agreement and possibly open the City owned Snodgrass building up to other non-profit groups for leasing was made by Council Member Danny Wyatt at last month’s Council meeting.  It was passed.   DCI posted this on their Face Book page:

DCI cares so much about the City of Crossville. If we are kicked out of Snodgrass (building), all these programs are in serious jeopardy. Our lease is on the agenda for the Thursday city council meeting, where we will likely learn our fate. Our board members have been working tirelessly for YEARS to better our Downtown. If y’all could send some good vibes our way, we would certainly appreciate it.

Some of DCI’s activities for Crossville are written about in THIS CROSSVILLE CHRONICLE ARTICLE.
