CHOCOLATE RECALL HAS TN IN HIGHEST RISK CLASSIFICATION TWO WEEKS BEFORE VALENTINE’S DAY DUE TO UNDECLARED ALLERGEN

1/30/25

Three chocolates made by the same manufacturer have been given the highest recall classification due to an undeclared allergen.

Dark Chocolate Almonds, Dark Chocolate Apricots, and Dark Chocolate Walnuts from Cal Yee Farm have been given a Class 1 recall classification by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because the chocolates contained undeclared milk.

Why It Matters

A Class 1 recall, means, per the FDA, exposure or consumption of the chocolates could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

In the case of these chocolates, the “serious adverse health consequences” could be caused by milk, one of the FDA’s nine “major food allergens.” In food they can lead to hives, cramps, dizziness, swollen vocal cords, and even unconsciousness, which is why they have to be declared on products.

What To Know

The chocolates were recalled on December 12 across Cal Yee Farms’ two retail stores in California and across the eight other states where people can place online or phone orders: Arizona, Virginia, New Mexico, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Several other Cal Yee Farms chocolates not included in the classification update on January 22 were also recalled on December 12 due to other undeclared allergens of almond, soy, wheat, sesame, and FD&C #6 food coloring.

The other chocolates have been given different classification updates. Those containing undeclared soy and wheat have Class 1 classifications, but the chocolates with undeclared almonds and FD&C #6 were given a Class II classification.

This classification means the food can cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” per the FDA.

In a press release at the time of the December recall, Cal Yee Farms said: “No illnesses have been reported to date.”

The FDA has recalled six other products so far in January 2025 due to them containing undeclared milk.

On January 10, the administration recalled several NuGo granola bars; on January 15, the FDA recalled Pancake and Waffle Mix made by Pearl Milling Company; on January 1, it recalled Monkfish Liver produced by New York Mutual Trading, as well as three barbecue sauces made by Monkey Spit, which also contained undeclared wheat and soy, and on January 20 the FDA recalled curry-flavored Curvee Puffs Corn Puff Snack by Shirakiku.
