The center was established in 2019 for the purpose of bettering the quality of life of patients affected by diabetes or obesity under the vision and direction of board-certified internal medicine physician John Sherrill, MD. Dr. Sherrill saw the need to provide the community an intensive, patient-centered care model to combat the diabetes and obesity epidemic.

Cumberland Diabetes Center is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

The new practice is part of Covenant Medical Group, a division of Covenant Health that employs and manages more than 80 practice locations throughout the region, and Cumberland Medical Center.
