BOTH CANDIDATES DECLARE VICTORY IN CLOSE 4TH CONGRESSIONAL RACE
U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais, who has been battered by a series of scandals, is locked in a razor-thin battle with state Senator Jim Tracy to hang onto his 4th Congressional District seat in Tennessee’s Republican primary.
The latest numbers from the Associated Press released just before 11 a.m. Friday showed Tracy ahead of DesJarlais by just two votes.
Tennessee Secretary of State Blake Fontenay, however, says the state stands by its 35-vote margin count with DesJarlais over Tracy.
Fontenay said it “could take several days” before a winner is declared.
Just after 10 p.m., Tracy declared victory, beginning his speech to supporters by saying “We did it!”
“It takes all of us working together, and together we won tonight,” he continued.
DesJarlais also gave a victory speech:
“There were times the odds seemed insurmountable, but we never gave up. We kept doing our jobs in hope that the people would reward the good performance in Washington, and it looks like that’s what they’ve done,” said DesJarlais on Thursday night.
“I want to thank my constituents for voting to elect me to another term in Congress. I look forward to continuing my independent, conservative approach to stopping President Obama’s radical agenda,” the statement concluded.
Whoever is ultimately declared the winner will take on Democrat Lenda Sherrell, an accountant from Monteagle, and Independent candidate Robert Rankin Doggart in the November general election.
