TOPEKA (KSNT) — The holidays are a joyous time of year, and that unfortunately includes scam artists.

The Better Business Bureau is out with a list of the ’12 scams of Christmas.” People are searching for the perfect gift, the best deals or feeling generous, but that can make you a perfect target for online scammers and charitable impostors.

Avoid the unwanted gift of malware. Be careful of online e-cards and free gift card offers. Pop-up ads or emails offering free things can lead to bigger problems.

“They are just trying to get more of your information, trying to steal information from you. Bank account numbers, stuff like that,” said Matthew Smith, computer repairman with the Geek Squad.

Beware of unusual forms of payments, fake shipping notifications and social media gift scams.

Social media gift exchange sounds like a great deal right? Buy one gift and get 30 in return. Wrong! It’s a variation of a pyramid scheme and it’s illegal.

The BBB says its scam season when it comes to the holidays. And for those feeling charitable. ‘Tis the season to watch for phony charities.

“Support well established charities, request information in writing , never be pressured into giving and ask how much of your donations goes for fundraising costs,” says Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.
