ALERT: KROGER RECALLS APPLES – LISTERIA CONTAMINATION

Kroger, the big Cincinnati-based chain, said it has recalled lunchbox-size Fuji and Galas sold between Dec. 12 and Tuesday. Besides individual pieces of fruit, it includes Michigan-grown apples sold in 5-pound bags and sold in Kroger stores in various cities in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Ohio, Virginia, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Listeria monocytogenes may cause serious or fatal infections in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems as well as miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In otherwise healthy people, Listeria can cause high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
