ALCOA MAN HIT RIDING IN WHEELCHAIR, KILLED – DRIVER RAN OFF

A suspect was being interviewed Wednesday afternoon in an Alcoa hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of a 71-year-old man riding in a wheelchair, according to Alcoa authorities.

Hampford W. Murphy, who lived at Broadway Towers in Maryville, was hit shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday near Calderwood and Sanderson streets. Murphy was leaving the Midland Shopping Center in his electric wheelchair.

Murphy was struck by a green 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier going north on Calderwood. According to authorities, the car backed up after hitting him, turned onto Sanderson and fled.

A witness gave police a license plate number, which led officers to the Cavalier, parked at the Blount County Public Library on Cusick Street in Maryville. A suspect was located at a nearby business and then interviewed by Alcoa Police Department investigators.

Hampford appeared to be severely injured when police arrived about 2:13 p.m. on the scene, according to a news release. He was pronounced dead at University of Tennessee Medical Center.
