Nashville area callers have a new area code that will be distributed starting today.

The extra effort is because the 615 area code is running out of numbers. Anyone within certain areas who gets a new phone number anytime soon will have a new 629 area code.

“All calls will be local that were local before,” Foster said. “There’s going to be no toll charges. You would not have to dial a one.”

No one’s number will change, but hitting speed dial or tapping on contacts may not put the call through unless you have the area code as part of the saved number.

“You will be sent a recording advising you that the number cannot be completed as dialed and to dial the area code,” Foster said.

There will be some exceptions to the change.

“911, 211, 411 will not be affected,” Foster said.

The first 629 area code numbers could possibly be issued within the next month or two.
