FORMER CROSSVILLE RADIO PERSONALITY PASSES
A former Crossville radio announcer has passed away at the age of 81. Mel Matthews was an on-air personality during the mid-70’s at WAEW-AM/WAEW-FM. He was also the ‘Voice of the Jets” during that time doing play-by-play announcing. Mr. Matthews, who lived in Pikeville, is a former sheriff of Bledsoe County and did morning news for a time on WUAT in Pikeville. He was semi-retired and doing work for the local judge’s office. A Celebration of Mel’s life will be Friday at 2:00 pm CDT in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Jimmy Garner officiating. Burial will be in Pikeville Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, 2-9 pm CDT.
