Quite a meeting the Cumberland County Board of Education had on an early Saturday morning yesterday.  Part of the meeting was special called to vote on the revised school budget for the coming year.  The resolution was to use a one-time contribution from the County of approximately $459,000 to buy text books and replace the roof at North Cumberland Elementary School.  That resolution failed in a tie vote – 4 to 4.  Board member Janeway was not present at the meeting.  Tentatively there is another meeting scheduled for Thursday at 5pm to once again vote on the BOE budget…this after the County Commission votes on the county budget and ten-cent property tax hike Monday night.  The big surprise of the morning meeting was when Director of Schools Donald Andrews announced his intentions of resigning effective June 30th, 2016.  Mr. Andrews read a letter to the Board announcing his intentions before the meeting and then distributed the letter to the Board members.  No reason was given by Mr. Andrews for wanting to resign as DOS.  Mr. Andrews was just hired in 2013 as the Director of Schools and was given a four-year contract.
