MORE THAN $150.00 PER MONTH FOR CIGARETTES SOON UNDER NEW TN LAW

downloadTennesseans will be seeing the price of cigarettes going up soon. Governor Bill Haslam has signed a bill that will increase the cost of smokes some 85 percent spread over the next two years. The new law simply forces retailers to sell smokes at a higher price.  This isn’t a tax increase on cigarettes – simply more profit for retailers.  The law will give retailers about $128 million in extra revenue by the third year.  Tennessee is one of 25 states that have a “mark-up law” on cigarettes which mandates the minimum price retailers can charge.  Currently a pack of cigarettes in Crossville averages about $4.79.  The new law will eventually increase that by 76 cents and at a pack a day – you’re looking at more than $150 for a monthly cigarette budget.
