OFFICIAL: EF1 TORNADO HIT CUMBERLAND COUNTY TUESDAY NIGHT
CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Tenn. — The National Weather Service preliminarily ranked two tornadoes that hit East Tennessee on Tuesday.
An EF-0/EF-1 tornado struck Oliver Springs on Tuesday afternoon, and an EF-1 tornado hit Cumberland County later that night, according to the NWS.
Surveyors reported that wind speeds reached up to 80 to 100 mph in Oliver Springs and up to 105 mph in Cumberland County.
Two lines of storms moved through East Tennessee on Tuesday, first around 3 p.m. and then again around 10:30 p.m.
NWS-Morristown crews spent Wednesday surveying Roane, Anderson, and Morgan counties, as well as possible damage in northern Bledsoe County.
NWS-Nashville also sent a crew to Cumberland County, where at least one building was destroyed, and another to Montgomery County.
Anderson County officials reported that power lines went down at the intersection of Knoxville Highway and Lookout Avenue during the first round of storms. Morgan County officials also reported a few downed trees.
Emergency management officials said up to 15 homes were damaged in the southern and southwestern part of Cumberland County during the second round. There were no reports of injuries or fatalities.
crews in southern Cumberland County found one building reduced to rubble and another home with its roof ripped off entirely. The homeowners returned to the house around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday morning. They said they had lived there for over 30 years.
