Sheriff Casey Cox explained that 21 year old Layla Aperans was allegedly abducted from her home at gunpoint by 44 year old Douglas Davis. Sheriff Cox said Davis and Aperans had known each other for about a year, but wouldn’t elaborate much further about their relationship as the case is still under investigation.

Sheriff Cox said the car that Davis stole to abduct Aperans was found by Kentucky State Police within 24 hours of her disappearance in a soybean field in Kentucky. The car was empty and sitting in the field that also happened to border the Fort Knox military base.

Cox credited the quick response and willingness to help by Kentucky State Police to finding Davis and Aperans so quickly.

“I believe that it was very possible that this response saved her life,” Cox said.

Davis and Aperans were found behind a gas station in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

Davis is behind bars in a Hardin County, KY on charges of aggravated kidnapping, felony possession of a firearm, and rape. All three are felony charges.

Cox said Davis will face ‘several’ more charges when he is brought back to Tennessee.

The following detailed account of the abduction appeared in the Crossville Chronicle:

Thursday around midnight, Lake Tansi Public Service officers and sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a Cherokee Trail residence to meet with the victim of a robbery and the kidnapping of the victim’s girlfriend that took place on Uno Lane.

A 23-year-old man told officers that Davis, who is an acquaintance of the couple, came to his home around 7 p.m. and stayed for several hours. At one point, the man said Davis pulled a handgun on him and his girlfriend (Aperans) and told the male to get onto the floor.

Davis then ordered the man’s girlfriend (Aperans) to help tie him with Duck Tape. The man was then dragged to the bathroom and left. For a period of time, the man said Davis would come to the bathroom to check on him every few minutes and to see if he had freed himself.

The man said he then heard (Aperans) scream and heard Davis tell her to get the keys and her shoes. The next sound he heard was his car starting and then leaving. The man freed himself and walked to a phone on Cherokee Trail to call for help.

An immediate broadcast was issued for police agencies to be on the lookout for Davis, ( Aperans), and the victim’s 1998 Toyota Camry.

Nothing was heard from the missing woman and her captor until she was recovered at a Pilot Truck Stop in Elizabethtown, KY, around 1 p.m. on Saturday. Davis was taken into custody without incident.

The Toyota Camry was recovered by Kentucky State Police in a bean field near Fort Knox, KY. A handgun was also recovered by state police.

Davis is said to be a convicted felon in the state of Florida and may be wanted for questioning in a series of crimes in Indiana.
