CROSSVILLE MAN PULLS AWAY AND TELLS POLICE HE IS NOT GOING TO JAIL – THEN THIS HAPPENS
On July 12, 2023 a City officer observed a green Chevrolet pull out of the Walgreens parking lot and make a right turn onto Elmore Rd making a very wide right turn. The vehicle then approached the Elmore and West Ave. intersection, where it turned into the turning lane traveling well over the center line . It then made a left turn onto West Ave. making a short turn traveling close to oncoming traffic. The officer then observed the vehicle travel on and over the outside white line on West Ave., and then make a right turn onto Miller Ave traveling 30 mph in a 40 mph zone. Because the officer was observing possible signs of intoxication by the driver he initiated his lights at Tenth St. and Miller Ave. The vehicle failed to stop in the area of TCAT. After the vehicle continued to travel and made no attempt to slow down or stop, the officer activated his sirens. The vehicle continued to travel approximately 1/2 mile and then pulled into the Dollar General Market.
The officer then made contact with the vehicle and the driver was identified to be 27 year-old Joshua Roberts. In an attempt to further investigate as to whether Mr. Roberts was intoxicated the officer asked him to step out of the vehicle. Mr. Roberts would not step out of the vehicle and continued to sit in the car and argue about why he was being stopped. After several commands to step out of the vehicle from the officer, Mr. Roberts finally stepped out holding his phone while starting to film the incident. The officer then asked him to place his hands behind his back. Once the handcuffs were placed on him he started to pull away and stated that he was not going to jail. A second officer started to pull him towards a patrol unit when Mr. Roberts started to push against him causing another officer to grab his other arm and walk him to the patrol unit. Mr. Roberts would not get into the patrol unit stating he was not going to jail. The second officer had to push him into the patrol unit and another pulled him in by the passenger side. Once inside of the patrol unit, Mr. Roberts started to kick the window and door of the patrol unit. Due to the patrol unit not having bars and the damage that could possibly be caused, he was removed from the unit and placed into another unit where bars were located on the windows. He was then transported to the Cumberland County Justice Center. The initiating officer was granted warrants for Mr. Roberts by a Judicial Commissioner for evading arrest and resisting arrest.
