A father and son were found dead inside a business in Pickett County which borders Fentress County on Thursday.

Danny Dowdy and his son, Cody Dowdy, were working at their family store, the Sugar Shack, when they were killed.

“Around 6 o’clock this morning, the neighboring county had notified us to check the business,” said Sheriff Dan Dowdy.

The TBI marked bullet shell casings on the ground, but so far, they aren’t releasing how the father and son were killed.

The TBI also doesn’t have a motive or anyone in custody as a suspect or person of interest.

“The building does have surveillance video, as we understand. We are currently working to see, however, if that will wield any evidence that might help in this investigation,” said TBI spokesman Josh DeVine.

The victims were loved by the community and many people sat outside the crime scene tape on Thursday watching and waiting for news.

“I think that shows that the father and son were really loved and it shows a lot of how the community is. They really pulled together when something like this happens and supports the families,” Dowdy said.
