CITY COUNCIL GOES AGAINST LEGAL ADVICE AND REINSTATES CITY MANAGER

The Crossville City Council went against the advice of the City Attorney and voted to reinstate City Manager Greg Wood in a special called meeting Friday.  Wood had submitted his resignation over the Village Inn debacle where the city unlawfully evicted more than one hundred tenants at the Village Inn on July 27th.  The tenants were allowed to return to their quarters the very next day once the City Attorney advised the City there had been a procedural error in the action.  What that means is the City did not get a court order to evict the residents.  Wood rescinded his resignation.

The City hired a Chattanooga law firm to investigate the eviction operation involving the city police department, swat team, fire department, EMS, and codes department.  Based on that report Mayor James Mayberry proposed a motion to terminate City Manager Greg Wood.  During the discussion city attorney Will Ridley addressed the Council and recommended the Council terminate Manager Greg Wood due to future liability of the City with regard to the Village Inn evictions. The Council voted three to two against Mr. Wood’s termination.  Mayor Mayberry and Mayor Pro Tem R. J. Crawford (the future Crossville City Mayor) voted to terminate Wood with Council Members Shanks, Harrison and Gernt voting to retain Mr. Wood.  Council Members Harrison and Gernt spoke against the termination of Wood based on his high-performance rating in the past and his positive work as the City Manager over the past years. Today was the last day for City Attorney Ridley as he is about to take over as Circuit Court Judge in the 13th Judicial District. The Council voted to hire Randy York as the new City Attorney.
