HOW MUCH WOULD YOU SAVE ON GAS IF BOTH FED AND STATE TAXES WERE SUSPENDED
We’ve all heard about some lawmakers asking Governor Lee to suspend the state gas tax to ease the burden of a fill up during the current explosion of pump prices. President Biden has also asked Congress to suspend the federal gas tax to lower the price at the pumps.
So how much money are we talking about? What would be the savings? Currently, the Federal gas tax is 18.4 cents per gallon. Tennessee gas tax is 27.4 cents per gallon. It’s higher for diesel. But for now we’ll just count the total gasoline taxes we pay at the pump. The combined tax is 45.8 cents per gallon. Most modern cars hold about 15 gallons of gas with a few exceptions such as trucks that may hold up to 33 gallons. We’ll use 15 gallons for our estimates. Typical savings for drivers would be $6.87 per fill-up. For a fill-up once a week for a month – the savings would be $27.48 a month. It’s not looking very promising for the gas taxes to go away anytime soon. Governor Lee is opposed to suspending the gas tax and most of the U.S Congress is pushing back on Biden’s proposed fed gas tax suspension. In both cases, the suspension wouldn’t be forever. At best maybe six months. If that were to happen then the savings would add up to $164.88 for the suspension period based on one fill-up per week.
