BODIES OF TWO TEENAGE SWIMMERS RECOVERED AT CUMMINS FALLS
The bodies of two 13-year-old boys were recovered Saturday afternoon at Cummins Falls State Park in Cookeville.
According to Kelly Brockman, Communications Director of Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation, rescue crews recovered the bodies around 1 p.m. Saturday.
The children were swimming at the bottom of the falls Friday afternoon when they disappeared beneath the water’s surface.
They were with a group of about 35 children, who were at the falls as part of a field trip with Backfield in Motion. Backfield in Motion is a Nashville-based nonprofit organization dedicated to outreach with inner city youth.
The trip was sponsored by the Great Outdoors University.
Brockman says other children were in the water when the boys disappeared.
Search efforts were called off Friday evening. They resumed Saturday morning by multiple agencies, including the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Tennessee State Parks.
Cummins Falls State Park is temporarily closed. There’s no word yet on when it will reopen.
