FIRST HEAD COACH OF CCHS JETS FOOTBALL, ‘COACH’ L.A. FOX, SR. PASSES AWAY AT 92
He was known for many things, but being a quitter wasn’t one of them. L.A. Fox Sr. was a driven athlete from a very young age. He loved many sports and excelled in all that he ventured into. L.A. Fox, Sr. died earlier this week at the age of 92.
L.A. Fox Sr., or “Coach” as he was called by many, was the very first CCHS ‘Jets’ football head coach when all the county schools, Homestead, Crossville and Pleasant Hill consolidated into one central high school back in 1962. Coach Fox led the Jets in very impressive record wins during the years he was at the head coaching position alongside Edd Potts and C.W. Pemberton, coaching players like “The Crossville Comet” Curt Watson. Coach Fox was the coach of the Crossville football team, from the Red Devils era to the beginning of the CCHS Jets for ten-years.
Coach Fox graduated from Cumberland County High School in 1947 and was inducted into the CCHS Hall of Fame in 1998. Coach Fox was a very competitive tennis player most all his life – winning tournaments well into his twilight years and lending his name to the L.A. Fox Tennis Classic tournament.
Aside from promoting excellence in athletics in Cumberland County, Mr. Fox was a leader and exceptional role model not just for his students, but a Christian man who was a faithful member of the Church of Christ and very well respected by the community.
