CUMBERLAND CO SOLID WASTE DIRECTOR FIRED MORE THAN A YEAR AFTER SEXUAL MISCONDUCT CHARGES

The Former Cumberland County Solid Waste Director who was indicted by a grand jury just over a year ago for sexual misconduct was fired from his position last week.  Mike Harvel was indicted in Feb. 2018 on two counts of sexual battery, and one count each of assault and official misconduct. The case was investigated by the Crossville Police Department. Court papers indicate that Harvel allegedly caused physical contact to a female in early February of 2018 resulting in the assault charge. The sexual battery indictments stem from two separate incidents involving a female, one reportedly between early August 2017 and October 2017 and the other between early January and late February of 2018. The final charge of official misconduct comes from an alleged incident between early June 2016 and February of 2018 where, according to the indictment, Harvel committed an offense with intent to obtain a benefit or to harm another and receive a benefit not otherwise authorized by law. Harvel’s criminal charges have yet to go to trial.  His dismissal stems from a separate EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) investigation that ruled against Harvel.  Harvel was removed as Solid Waste Director but continued to be on the County payroll until his firing.
