The US Geological Survey confirms a 3.0 magnitude earthquake two miles from the Eagleton Village community near Maryville happened around 4:00 a.m. No damages had been reported.

East Tennessee has recorded multiple over the last few months:
– 4.4, 3.3 and a 2.1 in Decatur in December
– 1.5 in the Kingston area
– 2.7 in the Blaine area on the same day in December as the Kingston quake
– 6 quakes in the Maryville area in August

Despite these recent incidents, experts say this is really not concerning, and that residents should expect small earthquakes in East Tennessee.

The strongest on earthquake on record was a 4.7 magnitude earthquake in Blount County in 1973. There have been only three earthquakes recorded by the USGS in East Tennessee that were magnitude 4 or greater.

The earthquakes originated from a seismic area known as the East Tennessee Seismic Zone, which stretches from Northern Alabama to Southwest Virginia. Earthquake activity is is common in this area, with the vast majority of earthquakes registering a magnitude of 2.0 or lower.
