THP Cookeville said two people were killed and three are in critical condition in a Monday afternoon crash along Highway 136.

Officials said two vehicles were involved in the head-on wreck at the intersection of Bear Creek Road and Highway 136.

There were children involved in the wreck and were air lifted to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.

Joshua Burkett, 21, and Kathleen Maynard, 66, were both killed in the crash

Four others, Kayla Randolph, 26, David Maynard, 67, Nikita Maynard, 15, and Damon Maynard, 12, were all injured in the crash.

Preliminary information said Burkett was driving a vehicle with Randolph as a passenger traveling south on Highway 136, while David Maynard was driving the other vehicle northbound with three passengers. Troopers said it appears Burkett crossed the centerline and hit the other vehicle head-on.
