SPEED CAMERAS BANNED BY TN LAWMAKERS

OriginalOne of the last acts by Tennessee lawmakers this session was to ban unmanned speed cameras.

Rep. Andy Holt says he didn’t get everything he wanted out of the bill he proposed this year, but it’s a start.

The bill would ban local municipalities from setting up cameras to catch you speeding.

But it exempts school zones and s-curve roads, like the one on Hixson Pike in Chattanooga.

The original bill included red light cameras, but that part was stripped out.

Holt promises to try again next year.

If the Governor allows the bill to become law, the cameras will be gone when their current contracts expire.

Representative Holt says “Tennesseans are tired of having their constitutional right to face their accuser sold to private out-of-state companies.”

But don’t traffic cameras reduce wrecks?

“The truth is, almost all studies showing that cameras improve safety are sponsored by the very companies and municipalities that make millions of dollars off of them. Virtually every non-biased, peer reviewed study shows that the cameras actually have either a negative effect, or no change at all regarding safety. At best, the evidence is inconclusive. Regardless, we have to realize that we cannot sell our rights for the guise of safety.”
