SHOULD SCHOOL BUSES BE EQUIPPED WITH SEAT BELTS?

school bus seatbelts tl 081414 0056fOne might wonder if it’s been law for sometime now that automobile occupants must wear seat belts for their own safety, why aren’t school buses required by law to have seat belts.  It’s a question that’s been tossed around for years and  has come up again in the wake of the tragic and fatal dual school bus accident recently in Knoxville. .  Now, a Knoxville State Representative will see seat belts on school buses if he has his way. Democrat Joe Armstrong says that the proposed bill is still in its infancy, however some of his colleagues are agreeing with him. They say at least the bill will begin talks in that direction. Included in the proposal is the installation of seat belts on all new school buses, and phasing them in on buses already on the roads to help defray the cost. The NTSB in the past has only recommended seat belts for buses but didn’t go as far as requiring them
