REPORT: MAJOR COLLAPSE AT FRANKLIN LIMESTONE MINE CRAB ORCHARD (LHOIST NORTH AMERICA)
CNF has learned of a major collapse within what is formerly known as Franklin Limestone mines in Crab Orchard this morning. 
According to sources, no one was injured when a portion of the mine caved in. A plume of lime dust was blown as far as I-40 and some of the local structures received some damage. MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) is on the scene today to investigate the collapse. The internal collapse of the mine, now owned by Lhoist North America and is approximately two miles deep into the mountain with three levels, occurred around 6:30 this (Friday) morning. There were workers at the mine but none suffered injuries according to sources.

I heard if a certain boss was there at the time the boss would not have allowed the workers to leave the mine after hearing the pops and cracks that led to them making decision to get out!!! Let this be a lesson to the company management to never refuse the workers when they feel danger is imminent. Whether boss thinks it is or not. God gave some ONE a warning and he obeyed.

I worked there in management in the early 2000’s when it was still Franklin Minerals. Even though we had a mine engineer and MSHA was onsite regularly, I never personally saw either in the mine. MSHA was more concerned about guards on the shop grinder and a brake light out on our service truck. Management at the local level were ineffective and management from the Nashville headquarters we’re worse. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a major accident until now. Luckily no lives were lost.
