WOMAN ASSAULTED ON WALKING TRAIL IN COOKEVILLE, TROOPER CAPTURES SUSPECT

A state trooper helped to apprehend a suspect after a woman was assaulted on the Central Tennessee Heritage Rail Trail in Cookeville Friday night. The woman said she and a man were walking in opposite directions on the trail and as they passed he suddenly grabbed her from behind and was armed with a knife. The victim struggled with her attacker and sustained a knife wound to her hand but she was still able to free herself and run away. As she was fleeing, she came upon Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Jeff Brown who was also walking on the trail. Trooper Brown located 34-year-old Lance M. Estep, of Cookeville, who was still on the trail. With the assistance of Cookeville Police officers, Estep was apprehended and booked on charges of Aggravated Assault and Aggravated Sexual Battery. His bond was set at $50,000. Authorities say the woman saved herself from more serious injuries because she fought back.
