WHY DID CUMBERLAND COUNTY SCHOOL CLOSE NEXT WEEK AND SWITCH TO REMOTE CLASSES

Cumberland County schools released information on why the last-minute change regarding closing early next week and switching to virtual learning dates for the first of December.  As most already know, there has been a spike in COVID-19 cases in Cumberland County since the end of October. With each passing day, the statistics have been showing no decrease in COVID-19 spread throughout the county.  This spike caused the Director to make some tough decisions on keeping kids in school or letting them stay safe at home.    Director of Schools Dr. Ina Maxwell says the situation is developing day by day and the system wants to be ready to respond. The extended Thanksgiving holiday next week will also give time for the schools to be sanitized thoroughly as well as keep children home safe. There is also a shortage of bus drivers and substitute teachers during this critical time. As it stands now, students will be out all next week.  Classes will resume on a ‘remote’ basis from November 30th through December 2nd and in-person classes start back on December 3rd.
