WANT MORE RECREATIONAL FUN IN CUMBERLAND CO? – TAKE THIS SURVEY
Cumberland County is taking community input as it works towards creating a parks and recreation master plan.
Mayor Allen Foster said a survey is up on the county website HERE Foster said if the county is going to spend money, it needs to be on what the people want.
Foster said having a master plan in hand opens a lot of doors.
“When you can go and you’re applying for a grant from the state, federal or wherever and you can submit the parks and recreation plan along with it,” Foster said. “It just goes to show that you have done your homework and you’re not just haphazardly asking for something. You’re asking for something that’s needed and a part of a plan.”
Foster said that many grants even require a master plan to be eligible. Foster said he has heard residents wanting more trails and pools in the county, but wants to see what the data shows when the survey closes.
“We will be looking at doing a town hall,” Foster said. “There’s been a small focus group, you always start really small with a focus group and got the questions together. We’re doing the survey, and ultimately we’ll do a town hall or town forum and all the other data that we’re gathering will be packaged together into our plan.”
Foster said there has not been a decision on the master plans length, because having one that’s fresh and up to date is key. He said it will likely be a five to 10-year master plan.

Just an idea but what about the bigger skate park at garrison park and a huge pool? Sounds really awesome

We dont need any more parks or pools. We have plenty of parks around and we have plenty of lakes/creeks to swim in. Not to mention the hundreds of trails. I dont understand why everyone is hell bent on raising the taxes in the area. Its not our governments job to find something for us to do. Imagine if they concentrated on what they are suppose to like infrastructure or maintaining the parks we have. Or even paying its employees more to help lift the area up so its not just the implants here with some money.

Would love for it to be a dog friendly pool with rules
The dog park we currently have is unsafe.

I agree with you 100% Save the money on infrastructure like roads and maintenance. You don’t always have to spend every penny you take in. You could always cut taxes if you have too much left over.

How about using the money to fix the sidewalks?

I dont think another community pool should be out of the question. We have one at the state park and that’s great but not everyone has the ability or the means to get there. Have one closer to town where everybody has access to it. As far as the creeks and lakes, yes, we have plenty of those but not everybody feels safe or comfortable swimming in those places so why try and force them to?

I think the city should expand the obed river park to include the stretch of river from the existing park down to the north main Street crossing by crackerbarrel. Its close to the interstate and has some great ecology surrounding it.

I agree why create more when you already have plenty. The county is already an amazing area of resource people just prefer to not utilize what you have at your finger tips. The county is not an entertainment venue for folks to find something to do w/ their time. You will never please everyone as they will want everything for free and somewhere someone has to pay for something. Wasting water can be done at each persons home. Water is a resource we need to treasure not waste.

What a bunch of stick in the mudds. If something positive like more parks can be placed here to help the residents of this county, why not? I personally am tired of having the same 2-3 to go to over and over. They are nice, but a few more positive things going on here isn’t going to hurt. Though, the lack thereof may though. There is plenty of land sitting that could be made into something nice for everyone.

Well I think garrison park could use a new bigger skate park there’s so much room over there it could be next to the water park but there’s so much room it could be a bit far away from the water park, anyways with all that room it could be a bigger skate park and it could have a section for beginners that either use skateboards or skooters I think alot of kids and teens and adults would really like it it’d be awesome

I think a rec center with indoor/outdoor pool would do wonders.. We could have a swim team and more sports/activities for the older kids…. Once they age out the other things they have here from preteen up there isn’t much for them to do…

I think it would be nice to have more camp sites. Not a big fan of RV parks, which I think we have enough of. Places where you can just simply pitch a tent and enjoy the outdoors without having to hear someone next to you running a motor all day and night.

I agree. We need something centrally located for families who do not have the extra money or transportation to make it all the way to the state park. The areas like tansi and ffg require membership who’ve are also exspensive

It’s a great idea to build a new park for the kids and adults to all enjoy. Crossville has nothing to do besides go to the park so why not make it better?

I have 3 kids all under 11, I like the idea of a recreation center, indoor swimming pool, racket ball, gym, offer classes for kids, have a small admission or annual admission for families. I would definitely pay to have a nice facility to bring my kids too. This town does have nice parks but nothing for kids to do when it’s raining out and we get a lot of rainy days here on the plateau. Also I think anything to help kids stay healthy by being active is a plus. A long bike trail would be very beneficial as well, there are none in crossville. The city park does not allow you to go on the trail with bikes, the state park has a nice black top path but again no bikes allowed. We end up driving to cookeville to the park and trails there just so my kids have a safe place to ride their bikes.

We don’t need any parks. But we do need to get our roads and sidewalks fixed. Put up traffic lights and stop signs where they need to be. There are too many accidents and people getting hurt. So please work on the safety for the people and put up traffic lights and stop signs where they need to be. You want to hear us. We are telling you. Keep us save and work on fixing the roads and if you can put up cameras where they can help keep people safe.

What about a combination of something similar to a YMCA and a family rec center with programs and activites run professionally? We really need something for children after school and during the Summer. Child care is a huge problem in this county. We need a place for ALL children. As we see drug and alcohol abuse increase among our children and teens, the need for a positive atmosphere is more important than ever. We can invest in many things as a community, but dollars spent toward the enrichment of children will pay out 10 fold . This is the future of Cumberland County and the children and teens we pay attention to now will become the adults living a productive life instead of becoming a drain on society. As far as taxes, go anywhere off this mountain and citizens pay much more. If we want to create a future for young families and their children to stay and work here, we need to invest, and the tax base that exist is now will not fund what is needed and what has been needed for many years. We have so many non-profits that work with children with plethora of knowledge regarding the true needs of our children and families. A collaboration of that nature would he a good start to the conversation.

An Indoor pool that is not in a private resort/community. Wading pool like Chattanooga has for smaller kids. Toddler friendly amenities.

An indoor pool with a small fee for locals is an excellent idea. We need something to keep and attract families. The government is supposed to provide services and rec services would be great for our area. But our schools and teachers also need more attention, and Main Street desperately needs to focus on some crosswalk lights. People don’t know when to cross and cars don’t know when to let people do so.

Fairly new to the area, There need to be something for kids & teens to do. Bored kids mean possible problems. There also need to be more opportunity for employment for these same kids.

We have plenty of areas for hiking, I would like to see the roads fixed, to have better shopping, restaurants to go to here instead of having to go to cookville, or Knoxville , keep the money in our own community.

I am highly in favor of a recreational facility in Cumberland County/Crossville. It would be a great opportunity if our County and City might be able to work together and come up with one mega-facility. An indoor pool is a necessity. An outdoor pool would be very nice, too. The facility should be user friendly for all ages – key is to keep our children and teens active in a positive way. I know this is one big expense, but it would be worth it in the long run. Let’s make Cumberland County and Crossville a real destination and magnet for new businesses and restaurants.
