TENNESSEE ‘SLOW POKE’ LAW COULD BE EXPANDED TO ALL INTERSTATE TRAVEL

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) –A proposed Tennessee law wants to expand on 2016’s “Slow Poke” law to keep slow drivers out of the left lane on most Tennessee roads.

Currently, drivers on interstates and multilane divided highways of three or more lanes are not allowed to drive in the far left passing lane except when overtaking or passing slower vehicles in non-passing lane.

Senator Paul Bailey, R-Sparta, and Rep. John Mark Windle, D-Livingston, want to expand on the law to make it any Tennessee road of two or more lanes.

SB1497 would delete the language in the law stating “three or more lanes” and change it to “two or more lanes,” in an effort to prevent issues on more roads.

The penalty for being a slow poke driver would remain the same -a $50 citation. If passed, the law would take effect July 1, 2019.
