POLICE IN MILLERSVILLE TN STOPPING CARS – HANDING OUT…..TOYS!

pulled-over-by-policeIn a little town about 25 miles north of Nashville, you may be pulled over by police and given….a toy.

It’s a brand new program where officers are stopping motorists with children and giving the little ones brand new toys. According to Police Chief David Hindman, every officer has a trunk load of items that were donated by an anonymous source.

The idea is to bring goodwill to children who might not receive anything for Christmas.

Thursday was the first time this had been done in Millersville. A Nashville tv station (News 2) rode along with new officer, Eric Richards, as he looked for cars with kids.

Richards said people are usually unhappy on a traffic stop, but he hopes that once he explains what he’s doing it will bring a smile to the face of parents.

“This program is about giving back to the community, showing kids not to be afraid of the police. That we are good people,” explained Richards.

One of the cars he pulled over belonged to Theresa Hudson, who had her two children inside. After briefly speaking with Hudson, Richards went to his trunk and pulled out a toy for a girl and one for a boy.

When he returned to the window, Hudson was looking for her registration. Richards then surprised her with the toys and said, “I want to wish you Merry Christmas.”

Hudson said the presents were a nice surprise and certainly better than a traffic ticket.

“It was scary, but the presents are great. My children will love them,” said Hudson.

She also told News 2 she likes the program and said it is nice for hard working parents. “I work in the school system and I don’t make a lot of money.”

Officer Richards said the stop was a good experience.

“It felt good, really good. I wasn’t expecting that reaction and I feel like I made someone’s day.”

The Millersville police chief said his officers are also driving through deserving neighborhoods and handing out toys to children. The program will continue through Christmas, but more toys are welcome and needed.
