NO CHANGE IN MAIN STREET TRAFFIC DESPITE ‘STAY-AT-HOME’ ORDER

Governor Lee’s ‘Stay-at-home’ order doesn’t seem to be taken very seriously yet in Crossville.  While it’s true many residents have necessary travels during these trying times,  in our tour of Crossville today there was virtually no difference in downtown traffic than any other day.   We talked with the Sheriff last night who expressed his wishes that people would heed the Governor’s order to stay at home but that his hands were tied from an enforcement standpoint.  The list of essential activities is just too long and too inclusive to be stopping people who are traveling. A simple statement of “going to the store” releases anyone from going against the Governor’s order.  Governor Lee did authorize local law enforcement to issue fines for not staying at home – it’s a class A misdemeanor – but with the ‘essential’ activities list being so long, there’s not much the law can do.  Government officials and medical personnel are asserting that if people do not stay at home, it’s going to take a long time for the Coronavirus to slow down throughout the country.
