MOMENT OF SILENCE SCHEDULED IN KNOX FOR MISSOURI POLICE SHOOTING VICTIM

Police officers watch as demonstrators protest the death of black teenager Michael Brown in FergusonAn event is scheduled in Knoxville’s Market Square Thursday night as part of a National Moment of Silence organized on social media to honor victims of police brutality.

“This is a simple gathering, a moment of silence for the many victims whose lives have been ended at the hands of those who are supposed to protect us. Bring signs, bring your stories, bring what you will. But we will be peaceful and respectful. We are here to honor the lives of those lost,” said organizers on the Knoxville event’sFacebook page.

The events began with the Twitter hashtag #NMOS14, calling for a moment of silence following the death of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown who was killed by police officers Saturday in Ferguson, Missouri. Friends and relatives said Brown was doing nothing wrong.

The death has resulted in several nights of violent protests in the St. Louis suburb. Officials say their investigation into Brown’s death could take weeks.

The Knoxville event is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Market Square.
