HORSE RESCUED FROM SINKHOLE IN MT. JULIET
A horse was rescued from a sinkhole in Wilson County on Thursday morning.
Officials with the Wilson County Emergency Management Agency said the 10-year-old Quarter Horse named Boomer somehow fell into the 10-foot sinkhole on the property in the 3900 block of Nonaville Road in Mt. Juliet. That’s just off Saundersville Ferry Road and not far from the Cumberland River.
Officials said the horse’s owner came out to ride him and found him in the sinkhole. It’s believed Boomer was eating grass near the hole and fell in when he got spooked by something overnight.
The hole had reportedly been on the property for a while, and the owner said Boomer knows the property.
Crews responded around 8 a.m. to determine how to get Boomer out. He was sedated before being pulled out in a harness by a wrecker just before 10:30 a.m.
“We knew there was no other way we could get him out other than lift him or we had a back up plan of getting some heavy equipment down here and start digging a path out. That would’ve taken a while,” said Lt. James Copus with WEMA.
The animal was then checked out by a veterinarian.
It took him a while to wake up from the anesthesia, but he was soon able to stand up.
“Just going to do a little preventative medicine here. Make sure it doesn’t have any issues in the long run from this,” said veterinarian Dr. Travis Whitlow. (NewsChannel 5)
