The Tennessee General Assembly has approved two sales tax holiday weekends to help Tennesseans save money and support the economy during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this new plan is only effective for 2020.

The first tax-free weekend will occur from Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2. It begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and ends Sunday at 11:59 p.m. During this weekend, consumers can purchase clothing, school supplies and qualifying electronic devices such as computers without paying sales tax.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused immense economic strain on Tennessee families. These sales tax holidays will allow them to keep more of their hard-earned money and support Tennessee businesses,” said Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee.

Price restrictions do apply. For school supplies and clothing, the price restriction for qualifying items is $200 or less. For computers and other electronics, the price restriction is $3,000 or less.

The items consumers buy can only be for personal use, not business or trade.

The second tax-free weekend will be held starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 7 and end at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, August 9 which will will focus on the retail sale of food and drinks by qualifying restaurants
