This scam involves a “pop-up” window some people are receiving on their computers which directs them to call a representative with Microsoft about a problem with their computer. When you call the number, the call-taker asks you to log into your Event Viewer which logs Microsoft error reports. The representative tells you the errors are warnings and a major problem which will corrupt your computer. They tell you they can fix the problem with additional software at a cost of $359. When you give them credit card information, they tell you the name of the company is “Pro Tech.” This company does NOT represent Microsoft. This is a SCAM!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advised that if you receive a pop-up on your computer, a phone call, spam e-mail, or any other urgent message about a virus on your computer, stop! Do not download anything, do not call the number on the pop-up, and do not give anyone control of your computer. You can report the scam to the FTC on their website at ftc.gov/complaint. Microsoft also wants you to report scams to them at www.microsoft.com/en-us/reportascam.  Best advice for online users:  DON’T DO IT.  Don’t download anything.  Don’t click on anything that you aren’t familiar with. Don’t call anyone when asked to.  Don’t EVER give anyone your personal info online or otherwise.  Don’t click on “click bait” fake news posts that seem interesting.  Don’t go to web sites you don’t trust.
