CITY ATTORNEY: CROSSVILLE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MUST ADHERE TO OPEN MEETINGS LAW

In the past, the Crossville/Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors meetings were closed to the public.  That sparked a debate as to whether the Board meetings could legally be closed to the public.  An opinion was asked for by City Council Member Danny Wyatt from the City Attorney who looked into the matter.  Turns out, the Board of Directors meeting must be open to the public in part because the Chamber gets a large percentage of funding from taxpayer money in the form of contributions from the City and the County.  Yesterday, (June 14) the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors  meeting was open to the public for the first time. Although the meeting was open to the public, only about 5 people attended the meeting who were not on the Board. CNF was the only media present for the meeting.

The final agenda item was the only one that got a lot of attention from the Board members:  Evaluation of the Chamber head Brad Allamong, president and CEO.  After several Board members discussed the evaluation and some of its ‘perceived’ flaws, a motion was made to vote on retaining Mr. Allamong or not.  That motion was seconded but some of the members expressed concern that this was not the meeting to vote on keeping the president.  The motion was amended to say wait for the three months and look at the evaluation again.  The evaluation scores were not presented to the media so it’s unclear how Mr. Allamong was rated from the evaluation.
